Cunningham Children's Home
In 2009, Steve started at Cunningham Children's Home. He primarily worked with at-risk boys ages 8-18 with therapeutic interventions and life skills in residential treatment and group home settings. His time at CCH ignited a desire to become a foster and adoptive family.
Perspectives Charter School
The Schaper's were off to Chicago, where Steve worked as an ADL (A Disciplined Life) Advisor at Perspectives High School of Technology on the South Side. He was responsible for all things discipline for the senior class including rewards, incentives, and negative consequences. He mediated conflicts, supported students, parents, and staff. At year's end he was nominated by peers for a prestigious network-wide award.
Grace & Peace Youth
In 2014, Steve began as pastoral internship and Youth Director at Grace & Peace Fellowship in St. Louis, MO. He met with students and families, led youth group: games, messages, and worship, and oversaw service projects. His work also included preaching before the congregation and leading the liturgy quarterly.
The Freedom School
Steve also worked part-time at The Freedom School, a Christian school within the New City Fellowship Network of ministries. As PE teacher he ran around and played games with students, but more importantly, led chapel weekly and had the opportunity to disciple students.
